It’s insanely delicious! This Pineapple Tea or Pineapple Tisane as herbal / spice teas used to be called!
Try this recipe and I think you’ll agree—the flavor is out of this world for spring season drinks.
Pineapple Tea or Tisane is naturally as sweet as the fruit is! Pineapple Tea is versatile, too—I can think of a few ways to make it. For one, it’s a simple and elegant infusion or decoction… Made another way the tisane is a fruity base with for your spring drinks and smoothies. And with an additional ingredient for extra nutrition and energy, why not try a magical adaptogen (an all-around energy-supporting herb) along with the spices? Pineapple Tisane can even be steeped as a raw drink.
Pineapple Tisane
Also known as Pineapple Tea
Ingredients
2 – 3 dried, unsweetened pineapple rings, chopped
hot water for soaking
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 cinnamon stick
1/2 – 1″ chunk gingerroot, sliced or chopped
2 – 3 Chinese dates known as Jujube dates, or Medjool dates, pitted
2 – 3 clove buds
2 cups water for infusion
Method:
1. Roughly chop pineapple rings. Place in a ceramic bowl and cover with hot water to soak.
Allow to rest at least an hour. Longer is better. You’ll notice how plump the pieces of pineapple get when rehydrated like this.
2. Next, bring soaking water, plumped up pineapple pieces, and spices together in a pan on the stove. Pour the 2 cups of water over them. Bring to a boil, then turn down heat and simmer for 20 minutes.
Remove from stovetop. Allow to rest, covered, until cooled.**
3. When cool enough to handle, strain out pineapple pieces from the tea water and spices. Reserve these for another use, such as for a smoothie.
4. Now strain the spices from the tea water. Your Pineapple Tea is now ready to enjoy!
Bottle and be sure to refrigerate for up to 3 days if any tea remains!
NOTES:
** These directions are followed closely for making tea in a short amount of time. If you have more time, allow the brew to rest overnight in a covered container, bottle or thermos. Next day, follow steps 3. and 4. as above. Your pineapple tea will be richer in taste.
Adaptogen added to Pineapple Tisane
They look the same, but for this Tisane or herbal tea, you could add an adaptogenic herb such as ashwaganda root to the spices and pineapple. Among other properties, ashwaganda (Withania somnifera) supports the nervous system, helps combat insomnia, and protects against aging.
Sometimes infused together with ashwaganda, Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum) is another adaptogenic herb. Its properties include stomach regulating actions that soothe and combat bloat and gas. See more on adaptogens, here.
Ingredients for Pineapple Tisane with Adaptogens:
2 – 3 dried, unsweetened pineapple rings, chopped
hot water for soaking
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
2 teaspoons dried ashwaganda root (an herb), or 1 tablespoon of ashawaganda powder
1 teaspoon Holy Basil herb (optional)
2 – 3 Chinese dates known as Jujube dates, or Medjool dates, pitted
1/2 – 1″ chunk gingerroot, sliced or chopped
2 cups water for infusion
Method
Follow steps 1. – 4. above. Consider steeping the tea overnight for richer flavor as described in Note, above. Otherwise, the steps to making it are the same as original Pineapple Tisane!
