A Vegan Lifestyle Product Review from Herbology East and West’s Lotus Lady & Verse.
A Mōksa Organics’ Body & Face Bar is so good you could eat it—a delectable treat for your skin! It’s made of organic oils (5 of them to be exact) plus shea butter, plus pure essential oils. And it looks inviting sitting in the shower caddy or on a soap tray—like, oh yes!—my bath-time is going to be fantastic today!
Mōksa Organics’ Mint Basil & Lime flavored soap smells like a spring rain shower. It’s the perfect bar for me because I know that it contains no chemical preservatives that could harm my skin, or me in the process. Scented with mint, basil and lemon balm plus lime makes it so divinely light and moisturizing. Followed by Mōksa Organics’ Mint Basil & Lime Body Oil and smoothing it all over gives my skin a light and pretty cloak against hot or dry weather.
Three of its four ingredients sound like luscious herbs and fruits. And the fourth might be familiar as a relaxing herb. Mint has the characteristic of raising my mood. It’s a most popular scent for its clean and high notes; the botanical been called “analgesic” meaning it eases pain, and has deodorizing properties. Can you imagine how good that smells in a soap or body oil?! Basil, also an herb in the mint family of herbs, supports the mint scent and adds a spicey note. Lemon balm is a very calming-oriented herb, and it soothes the skin. Lime, one of the citrus family of botanicals, has anti-bacterial properties, not to mention its spicey-clean scent. All this is carried on a wonderful mixture of organic oils making this soap a bar worth your shower.
It takes several oils together to make soap lather well and feel velvety. The quality of that lather is all about a formula of oils that when saponified results in a high quality bath and body bar. Saponified refers to a process of adding oils together, slightly heating them and then adding a lye solution in water which changes the physical nature of the oils and releases glycerin from them. What’s left is a creamy mixture to which scents and herbal extracts are added. Then the soap mixture is put aside to harden into a bar.
Five organic oils include saponified organic coconut, olive, sunflower, castor, and hemp seed. There’s also shea butter, known for its emollient properties. It’s even after-sun protective against dry skin.
Organic coconut oil is known for its richness, for its ability to soften skin and help protect against sun-burn if accompanied by appropriate essential oils. It’s from the coconut palm, a tree that supplies humans with food, drink, and medicinal substances.
Organic olive oil, already known for its health value in food, is valuable for soaps, and has been the ingredient or a major component of soaps for thousands of years*. Olive oil soap, plain and simple is a strong soap with good lathering and cleaning characteristics. But its strength makes it the leader of the ingredients list, tho’ not the only oil used by American craft soap makers. Olive oil is Organic and food-grade for external use, like an Extra Virgin Olive Oil for our skin. The label on organic soaps usually bears the term “Organic” or a seal from the USDA.
Organic sunflower oil is amazingly good for skin, as it has antioxidants and so nourishes and protects it. Organic castor seed and Organic hemp seed oil support the heavier oils giving them a sustainable quality.
That’s why a bar of soap that is hand-crafted usually costs more than the supermarket variety of soaps made in huge factories with processes that change the original nature of the oils. Like we don’t choose to eat white flour which has all the goodness and vitamins removed, we don’t want ingredients to be denatured that we use on our skins. We actually want the oils as close to their original state as possible in a bath and body bar that we use daily.
Why? Our skins are irreparably dried out with the slurry of chemically-clean soaps and our local tap water which contains additives and fluorine. Rather than giving up the luxury and sensuality of bar soap and using something else, it only makes sense to assure a measure of quality by using the highest quality bar soap.
Washing with a bar that has olive oil, coconut oil, sunflower, castor, hemp seed and shea butter, our skins feel clean but moist and supple. Makes skin ready for an application of scent or toner or make-up or even body oil if the day is especially hot or dry!
