Master Your Metabolism : the all-natural (all-herbal) way to lose weight. / Lewis Harrison. 2003. Published by Sourcebooks, Inc., Naperville, Illinois. 302 p., includes Index, Bibliography, and Glossary.
Looking at the current website http://www.chihealer.com it’s difficult to recognize the writer of this book. He has transformed into a financial or success wizard and coach, and yet he sells his self-help books on healing depression, fats and oils, and body purification (words are from the titles), from the 1990s, online. Interesting to follow that kind of life path, and not unlike other visionaries I can think of, but definitely doesn’t fit my definition of a person who’s an herbalist or nutritionist.
However, Master Your Metabolism : the all-natural (all-herbal) way to lose weight is compellingly written, in a certain style that is definitely not scholarly, but is clear and easy to understand. In fact, Harrison’s style is to bring you around to understanding a whole world of scientific evidence and studies, without having to ingest them yourself. Easy, right?
Nevertheless you want to believe in what a person is proposing, no matter their style of delivery, and the only way is to accept the testimonials and messages in full…
… And so I am asking, do we ever do that today? Do we ever accept a person’s writ, especially if the credentials are not apparent? Or if they change to focus on a new talent, is that quite acceptable? Or do we just go elsewhere for the facts, once we find out they are no longer bearing the “correct” badge, the one that matches who we think they should be?
I just had to put that question out there, in case you are wondering (I’m always curious, myself) about the author of this treatise on losing weight and obesity. Overweight—a state of affairs that presents as a metabolic disease—one of the most discussed problems in nutritionist circles, and in the most need of a variety of informed opinions.
Because only the afflicted person knows why they are in that position—the position of needing desperately to lose weight, in order to turn their lives around. Quite possibly, help may appear not only from doctors but also from thinkers, philosophers and nutritionists who have a wide knowledge on the subject from many angles. And so it may be the case with Master Your Metabolism, a title which certainly caught my eye.
