Cosmic and Frequency or Vibration
Vibrational Nutrition: Understanding the Energetic Signature of Foods by Candice Covington, 2021. Published by Healing Arts Press, a Division of Inner Traditions International, Rochester, VT. 226 pages, Resources, Index, Bibliography; illustrations in black and white.
A long-time vegetarian, I’m not used to contemplating cosmic messages from food.
Instead, the cosmic messages in food have thus far been lost on me! I guess feelings of hunger over-whelm often. As well, basic to satiety are the tasks of choosing and preparing food in a tasty manner. These actions are why I took many details for granted. Yet, when I think about it, I do believe that food has stored energy. That’s one reason I look forward to picking apples or going to farmer’s markets for apples. I believe that apples from the local orchards, are much better quality than any from the brick and mortar stores.
You might say it’s all about language and words we use to describe food. “It’s delicious”, “It tastes good”, etc. those are grateful adages, but leaving it at nice is tantamount to leaving out the larger aspect of why we choose certain foods in the first place.
Language and the Frequency of Food
Language is a huge player in emotions. We label our experiences with simple words, i.e. “good” or “bad”. If we like something as basic as food, we say we like it, or love it. And tend to be happily satisfied eating it. End of story.
Yet, Covington says we could go much farther. We could develop a language to use when food is communicating with us.
She also says that paying attention to the deeply cultivated vibrancy in what I eat most of—fruits and vegetables, herbs and spices, non-dairy, nuts and seeds, and beverage—is the first step in accessing the frequency of food. I sense that what I eat creates a shift in consciousness. But what kind of shift? To find out, I wanted to know more about food and its effects on me.
What is Vibrational Nutrition?
It turns out that we eat does in fact feed more than our physical bodies. High-vibrations from clean food focuses our minds and brings us in alignment with our best selves. So says author Candice Covington in her new book, Vibrational Nutrition: Understanding the Energetic Nature of Foods.
In 6 succinct chapters, Covington provides ways to approach the powerful resources in food. And these include not only the obviously good nutrition from locally sourced vegetables and fruits, etc. She says a personal investigation is in order. Do you know why you are attracted to the variety of foods you typically eat?
To find out about the deeper meanings of your attraction, Covington suggests locating your muse. If that seems out of reach, you might ask a variety of questions to provoke your inner self.
Some of these questions are prompts to deeper understanding: “What’s my totem or familiar in regard to food?”, or “Am I aware of the energy nodes in my body called chakras in the Ayurvedic system?”, and “Do I have a powerful impression of strawberries, or chocolate, etc.?”
The author advises taking a little time to observe reactions, keeping track of dreams, and finally emphasizing the foods that bring me joy to experience the energy they impart. Then a look at how closely my basic characteristics follow the energy of a food could reveal a sense of self in the universal sense.
My Totem or Food Familiar
Luckily for me, this book has revealed a whole new outlook. I sense that to become aware of the energetic signature of food I eat is to live well—whether organic or not. Covington says we should focus on foods that promote our inner being, our untrammeled selves, as she puts it. Thus, open to communication with our food familiar, we become informed about ourselves. She says:
“The energetic signature of each plant and animal offers the architecture of a stable foundation onto which we can consciously craft our world… ” p. 14
Covington encourages developing your archetype. Your “archetypal library” as she puts it, contains a very personal journal of your experience with the vibration of food. When you keep track of your experiences and write them down, that becomes your narrative. Your narrative is a useful tool for “learning the primordial language of dream symbolism”, as she puts it.
My narrative goes something like this: my tolerance for working hard for a good outcome stretches the limits of my physical durability. If I want to continue to work on projects, I have to design down time and relaxation into them. I know I can’t get to the imaginal realm if I don’t slow down. Once my pace is slower, my expectations are more reasonable, and I allow myself to relax, I might be able to listen to the food spirit that I know has been trying to get in touch with me for a very long time!
Vibrational Frequency of Food
Candice Covington’s introduction to the vibrational essence of food is a first layer of contemplation on the cosmos. Why not take this fanciful flight to imaginal realms and discover more about yourself as enjoying food?
The illustration (above) shows a beverage made of black tea, coriander, cumin seed, and fennel seed, and goji berries. The concoction is blended and added in half measure to coconut water for tasting!
From Covington’s chapter on the Frequency of Food, I discover that black tea is “for when your fiery energy needs to be directed towards positive service”. Coriander is “the effervescence of your emotional body”. Cumin “heals uneasy feelings”, and Fennel “uplifts when drudgery or obligation in tasks are abhorrent”. And Goji Berries “promote the study of ancient wisdom traditions”. Least of all, coconut water “helps you manifest your full potential”.
